IT managers need to worry about the large number of wasted bandwidth in hours worked.
From the research that disclosed Network Box, revealed that 6.8 percent of all the URLs accessed by the company ran into Facebook. The other 10 percent of bandwidth to go to YouTube.
In a study involving 13 billion URLs that are accessed by a number of companies with the aim of studying where the bandwidth among the business going, it was found that sucking Facebook and YouTube traffic bigger than Google and Yahoo.
Google succeeded in attracting 3.4 percent of traffic from all the URLs listed by the Network Box. whereas Yahoo's image server (YIMG) control 2.8 percent. Yahoo itself is only used as much as 2.4 of a total bandwidth of the measured companies.
"These figures show that IT managers need to worry about the amount of bandwidth that ran into the social networking or media at work," said Simon Heron, Internet Security Analyst, Network Box, quoted from SC Magazine, Thursday, April 22, 2010.
"There are two concerns here," said Heron. "First, the employee will download applications from social networking and jeopardize security. Second, the amount of bandwidth used for the company seems to activities outside of work, "he said.
The report highlights the particular business segment provides a good reason why many companies are pressing the use social networking in business hours. Because, from the research, the average 7 of 100 sites visited by employees on working hours are on Facebook.
Although the study did not record how much time is spent, but Facebook is the web site of the most demanding users. This means users are browsing through the site is bigger than an office break time.
"Maybe soon we will have an hour break for lunch and recess Facebook as part of the working hours of employees," said Heron. "Another alternative is to block social media sites in total, but apparently this will trigger the disappointment of employees," he said.
